Terrorism Act
The Terrorism Act 2000 is a UK law that replaced previous anti-terrorism legislation. It defines terrorism as acts causing serious harm or damage, or threats to cause such harm, and includes the power to arrest and detain individuals without a warrant. The Act also allows the Home Secretary to proscribe groups considered to be involved in terrorism, and individuals suspected of being members or supporters of these groups can be prosecuted. The Act has been criticized for its broad definitions and potential for abuse, and some of its provisions, such as the stop-and-search powers under section 44, have been ruled illegal by the European Court of Human Rights.
