Strait Of Hormuz
The Strait of Hormuz is a strategically important waterway between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, connecting the Persian Gulf to the open ocean. It is approximately 90 nautical miles long and has a width varying from 52 to 21 nautical miles. The strait is a crucial passage for international trade, with a third of the world's liquefied natural gas and almost 25% of global oil consumption passing through it. The strait has been an important location for centuries, with its vast hinterlands rich in luxury trade goods. The name "Hormuz" may have originated from the mother of King Shapur II, or from the local Persian word "Hurmogh" meaning date palm. The strait is navigated by ships following a Traffic Separation Scheme, and its territorial waters are subject to the transit passage provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea.learn more on wikipedia
