Statue of Liberty
The Statue of Liberty is a colossal neoclassical sculpture on Liberty Island in New York Harbor, designed by French sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi and built by Gustave Eiffel. The copper-clad statue was a gift from the people of France to the United States and was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It represents a classically draped woman holding a torch and a tablet inscribed with the date of the US Declaration of Independence, symbolizing freedom and democracy. The statue was conceived in 1865 by French historian Édouard de Laboulaye and was built after a series of fundraising efforts led by Joseph Pulitzer. It was administered by the US Lighthouse Board and then the Department of War before being maintained by the National Park Service as part of the Statue of Liberty National Monument.learn more on wikipedia
