Slavija Square

Slavija Square is a major commercial junction in Belgrade, Serbia, located less than 1.5 kilometers south of Terazije. The square was previously named Dimitrije Tucović Square after a Serbian socialist, but was renamed in honor of the Slavs. The area was once a large pond, naturally drained by a stream, and the earth from the nearby hill was used to flatten it. A Scottish businessman, Francis Mackenzie, bought the land and built a house, which later became the Socialist People's Center. The original inn, later hotel "Slavija", was built from 1882 to 1888 and was a popular gathering place for parties and events. Until World War II, the square was an unregulated crossroads, but plans for a makeover were cut short by the war.
