Sinai Peninsula
The Sinai Peninsula is a peninsula in Egypt, located between the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea, and has a land area of approximately 60,000 km2 and a population of around 600,000 people. It has been a part of Egypt since the First Dynasty of ancient Egypt, but has also been occupied and controlled by various foreign empires throughout history, including the Ottoman Empire and the United Kingdom. The peninsula was occupied by Israel during the Suez Crisis and the Six-Day War, but was returned to Egypt in 1973 and again in 1982 as part of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty. Today, the Sinai Peninsula is a tourist destination due to its natural setting and rich history. The name "Sinai" is believed to have been derived from the Christian assumption that a mountain near Saint Catherine's Monastery is the Biblical Mount Sinai, although some sources suggest that the name may have originated from the ancient Mesopotamian moon-god Sin.learn more on wikipedia
