The Schutzstaffel, commonly referred to as the SS, was a major paramilitary organization under Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party in Nazi Germany and German-occupied Europe during World War II. It began as a small guard unit known as the Saal-Schutz in 1923 and was later reformed and named the Schutzstaffel in 1925, with Heinrich Himmler as its director.
