Kurdistan Region
The Kurdistan Region is a semi-autonomous administrative division in Iraq, comprising four Kurdish-majority governorates in northern Iraq. It was established in 1992 following Iraq's defeat in the Gulf War and has a population of predominantly Kurdish people. The region has a disputed territory that is contested by the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Government of Iraq, which was subject to Arabization and genocidal campaigns under the Ba'athist regime. The region gained autonomy and became a parliamentary democracy with a growing economy, but its independence is still not recognized by the Iraqi government. The Kurdish people have a long history of struggle for independence, dating back to the British Mandatory Iraq era and the Mahmud Barzanji revolts, and have been aided by various international powers, including Iran, the Soviet Union, and Israel, in their fight for autonomy and self-governance. The region has experienced periods of conflict, including the First Iraqi-Kurdish War and the War in Iraq (2013-2017), but has also made significant progress in building a stable and democratic government.learn more on wikipedia
