Golan Heights

The Golan Heights is a basaltic plateau in southwest Syria, bordered by the Yarmouk River, the Sea of Galilee, the Anti-Lebanon mountains, and Wadi Raqqad. Two-thirds of the area has been occupied by Israel since the 1967 Six-Day War and was effectively annexed in 1981, a move not recognized by the international community. The region has been inhabited since the Upper Paleolithic period and has been ruled by various empires and dynasties, including the Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, Romans, Byzantines, and Ottomans.
