French Quarter
The French Quarter is the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans and was originally known as the Vieux Carré. It was founded in 1718 by Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville and developed around a central square. The neighborhood was heavily influenced by French and Spanish colonial architecture, with many buildings constructed in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the area became a meeting place for Francophone Creole and Anglophone American cultures, earning the nickname "neutral ground." The French Quarter suffered relatively light damage during Hurricane Katrina in 2005, due to its distance from the levee breach. It is now a National Historic Landmark and a major tourist destination, known for its ornate cast iron galleries, historic buildings, and vibrant culture.learn more on wikipedia
