Diego Garcia

Diego Garcia is an island in the British Indian Ocean Territory, a formerly disputed United Kingdom Overseas Territory that has been agreed to be returned to Mauritius. The island has been used as a joint base of the UK and US militaries since the 1970s, when its inhabitants, the Chagossian people, were forcibly expelled by the UK government to make way for the base. The UK has been in control of the island since the 1960s, and in 2024, the UK agreed to hand over sovereignty of the entire territory to Mauritius, with the military base allowed to remain on a 99-year lease.
