The Commonwealth of Nations is an international association of 56 member states, mostly former British Empire territories, connected through the English language and cultural ties. The organization has its chief institutions in the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Commonwealth Foundation, focusing on intergovernmental and non-governmental relations respectively. It was created as the British Commonwealth of Nations in 1926 through the Balfour Declaration and formalized by the United Kingdom in 1931.
