Berlin Wall
The Berlin Wall was a guarded concrete barrier that encircled West Berlin from 1961 to 1989, separating it from East Berlin and the German Democratic Republic. It was constructed by the East German government to prevent citizens from fleeing to the West, with over 100,000 people attempting to escape and an estimated 136 to 200 people killed by East German authorities. The Wall became a symbol of the Iron Curtain and the division between the Western and Eastern Blocs during the Cold War. In 1989, a series of revolutions in Eastern Bloc countries led to the fall of the Wall, with crowds of East Germans crossing and climbing onto it, and the Brandenburg Gate reopening on December 22, 1989. The Wall was eventually demolished in 1994, paving the way for German reunification on October 3, 1990.learn more on wikipedia
