Army Tactical Missile Systems
The Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) is a supersonic tactical ballistic missile designed and manufactured by the US defense company Ling-Temco-Vought and later Lockheed Martin. It is 13 feet long and 24 inches in diameter, and can fly up to 190 miles. The missiles can be fired from the M270 Multiple Launch Rocket System and the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System. The ATACMS was developed in the 1980s as a conventional-armed missile to strike enemy reserves, and was initially designated as the Joint Tactical Missile System before being redesignated as ATACMS. The program was terminated in 2007 due to cost, but a Service Life Extension Program was launched to refurbish and replace the remaining inventory. The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023 authorized the production of up to 1,700 additional ATACMS, but funding was not provided.learn more on wikipedia
