US Justice Department Announces Criminal Charges Against Hamas Leaders Over October 7 Attacks
The United States has charged six leaders of the Palestinian group Hamas with various terrorism-related offenses. The charges, unsealed on September 3, include conspiracy to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization, conspiracy to murder US nationals, and conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction resulting in death. The indictment accuses the six men, including Yahya Sinwar and Ismail Haniyeh, of orchestrating the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel that killed over 1,100 people and triggered an Israeli assault on Gaza that resulted in the deaths of over 40,800 Palestinians. The charges also accuse Iran and Lebanon's Hezbollah of providing financial support and weapons, including rockets, to Hamas. The US Attorney-General, Merrick Garland, stated that the charges relate to a "decades-long campaign to murder American citizens." This is the first formal action taken by American law enforcement against Hamas.
Make no mistake, Hamas leaders will pay for these crimes.
I call on you at this moment, I call on every one of you. Responding to Jihad is an individual responsibility. Whether you fight collectively or individually, this is your individual responsibility.
The charges unsealed today are just one part of our effort to target every aspect of Hamas's operations. These actions will not be our last.
Yahya Sinwar and the other senior leaders of Hamas are charged today with orchestrating this terrorist organization's decades-long campaign of mass violence and terror – including on October 7th.
We will continue to support the whole of government effort to bring the Americans still being held hostage home.
These actions will not be our last. The Justice Department has a long memory.
As outlined in our complaint, those defendants - armed with weapons, political support, and funding from the government of Iran, and support from (Hezbollah) - have led Hamas's efforts to destroy the State of Israel and murder civilians in support of that aim.
There are dozens of hostages still remaining in Gaza, still waiting for a deal that will bring them home. It is time to finalise that deal.
The United States has been heavily, enthusiastically and vigorously supporting Israel in its current actions in Gaza – in what the UN calls a plausible genocide. And it has long opposed groups like Hamas and Hezbollah, designating them as terrorist groups.
