UN Security Council Passes Ceasefire Resolution Aimed at Ending Israel-Hamas Conflict
ai generated text
The United Nations Security Council has approved several resolutions calling on Hamas to accept a ceasefire proposal. The resolutions were adopted with varying levels of support, with 14 out of 15 members voting in favor and Russia abstaining from one vote. The resolutions welcome a three-phase plan announced by US President Joe Biden, which calls for a full and complete ceasefire, the release of hostages held by Hamas, the return of dead hostages' remains, and the exchange of Palestinian prisoners.
Hamas welcomes what is included in the Security Council resolution that affirmed the permanent ceasefire in Gaza, the complete withdrawal, the prisoners' exchange, the reconstruction, the return of the displaced to their areas of residence, the rejection of any demographic change or reduction in the area of the Gaza Strip, and the delivery of needed aid to our people in the Strip.
It offers a glimmer of hope to the Palestinians.
Over the past eight months this council has often faced divisions and the world has taken notice with understandable frustration.
The fighting could stop today, if Hamas would do the same.
But there's another side to this story because today we adopted a fourth resolution on this conflict.
Hamas can now see that the international community is united, united behind a deal that will save lives and help Palestinian civilians in Gaza start to rebuild and heal.
It is Hamas that is preventing this war from ending. Hamas and Hamas alone.
Israel is not standing behind its own proposal and definitely not the draft proposal submitted by the Americans.
The resolution is giving new content to the Blinken visit here. I think there will be a very hectic morning discussing it tomorrow.
The cease-fire that would take place immediately would remain in place, which is manifestly good for for everyone. And then we'll have to see.
If you want a ceasefire, press Hamas to say, yes.
Efforts are continuing to study and clarify some matters to ensure implementation by the Israeli side.
Hamas is called upon to accept this so-called deal, but still there is no clear clarity regarding official agreement from Israel.
