Trump cancels threatened Iran strikes, says deal near

President Trump announced that he is canceling planned strikes on Iran, citing progress toward a potential settlement, while affirming that a naval blockade would remain in effect. The decision has been met with optimism about a diplomatic breakthrough, although Iranian officials have yet to confirm any agreement.
The whole Middle East is happy, and long beyond the Middle East.
It was a big, very big thing, but we have a signing soon, and the documents are in pretty final shape, so we'll see.
The whole thing is crazy, and they're really in submission, they just don't know it yet.
We are talking to them and all, but you know, look, my preference has always been — take Kharg Island ... my preference would be that. I don't know that America has the stomach for it.
Most importantly we have a deal that Iran will never have a nuclear weapon, which was the whole purpose of what we had to go through to get this. So it was a very big thing.
The strait will officially open as soon as we sign, which could be soon, very soon, maybe over the weekend in Europe.
Discussions and final points have been, in both concept and great detail, approved by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Turkey, Pakistan, Bahrain, Kuwait, Jordan, Egypt, and others.
The Naval Blockade will remain in full force and effect until this Transaction is finalized — Time and place of the signing to be announced shortly.
Based on the fact that discussions with the Islamic Republic of Iran have been brought to the highest level of Iranian leadership and approved, I have, as President of the United States of America, cancelled the scheduled strikes and bombings against Iran this evening.
But if I wanted to, we could put a small group of soldiers and take over the place.
I don't want to have boots on the ground.
We just made a great settlement of the war with Iran, and we're going to be subject to finalization of documents, we should get done over the next few days.
The problem is that the contradictions in America's position has caused turbulence to this process.
Wrong strategies and impulsive decisions will reset the entire board for the worse, explode energy infrastructure and markets and create an endless quagmire that you will be stuck in for years.
Considering recent US threats against Iran's oil infrastructure, either oil and gas exports are for everyone or they will be available for no one.
It's never that easy and we certainly shouldn't be telegraphing our moves or intentions. I think [Trump] is being just way too cavalier about how he's talking about this.
I think he's putting our men and women in very harsh danger … Kharg Island is a very small, dense place, it's not that hard to target [our] military formations.
The diplomatic route remains the best path out of this war.
A return to full-scale war would come at a tremendous cost to the entire region.
I spoke to Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi about the latest escalation in the Gulf and the state of negotiations with the US. I've also been in touch with the Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah. The resumed attacks on the Gulf countries and their critical infrastructure are unacceptable.
I think from a rhetorical perspective, Trump is still trying to manufacture reality that he wants to be true, but it comes up against the actual state of affairs that he doesn't have much control over at the end of the day.
Still, there is still not enough clarity that the Iranian supreme leader has signed off on this, so we'll have to wait and see until this becomes public and all sides are willing to share where exactly the compromise has been.
