Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to step down in September
Fumio Kishida, the current leader of Japan's ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), has announced that he will not seek re-election as party leader in the upcoming party elections next month. This decision will likely lead to a change in Japan's prime minister, as the winner of the LDP leadership contest will become the new prime minister. Kishida cited the need for the LDP to show the people that it is changing, and stated that his withdrawal from the election is the clearest way to achieve this. The LDP has been struggling with low popularity ratings and a damaging funding scandal, which has contributed to Kishida's decision not to run for a second term. The party's leadership contest is scheduled to take place in September, and the outcome will determine Japan's next prime minister.
For this, transparent and open elections and free and vigorous debate are important. The most obvious first step to show that the LDP will change is for me to step aside. I will not be running in the forthcoming presidential election.
I have made the heavy decision with a strong desire to move forward with political reform, because the people's trust is what makes politics work.
I will now focus on supporting the newly elected LDP leader as a rank-and-file member of the party.
I have decided not to run in the presidential race.
