Israeli football fans attacked in Amsterdam
Violence erupted in Amsterdam after a Europa League match between Maccabi Tel Aviv FC and Dutch club Ajax. Israeli officials condemned what they called widespread attacks on its citizens. At least 10 Israeli citizens were reported injured, with 57 people arrested amid the violence. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent two rescue planes to the Netherlands and called for increased security for the Jewish community in the Netherlands. Clashes reportedly took place outside the Johan Cruyff Arena and Ajax Amsterdam's home stadium, with supporters of Israeli club Maccabi Tel Aviv clashing with apparent pro-Palestinian protesters. Dutch police were deployed to the scene, and the Dutch Prime Minister, Dick Schoof, was in touch with Netanyahu.
Netanyahu stated that he views the planned anti-Semitic attack against Israeli citizens as serious.
We see with horror this morning, the shocking images and videos that since October 7th, we had hoped never to see again: an antisemitic pogrom currently taking place against Maccabi Tel Aviv fans and Israeli citizens in the heart of Amsterdam, Netherlands.
The violence against Israeli citizens in Amsterdam recalls history's darkest hours. I strongly condemn it and express my sympathy for the injured.
Antisemitism has absolutely no place in Europe, and we are determined to fight it and to fight all forms of hatred.
We want Jewish life and culture to thrive in Europe.
The mission will be deployed using cargo aircraft and include medical and rescue teams.
Mobs chanted anti-Israel slogans and proudly shared videos of their violent acts on social media — kicking, beating, even running over Israeli citizens.
The plane that arrived in Tel Aviv now has passengers evacuated from Amsterdam.
What happened last night has nothing to do with protest. There is no excuse for what happened.
Our city has been deeply damaged. Jewish culture has been deeply threatened. This is an outburst of anti-Semitism that I hope to never see again.
