Israeli airstrikes across Gaza Strip leave over 50 dead
The recent conflict in the Gaza Strip has resulted in significant civilian casualties, with at least 44 people killed and dozens wounded within an hour across the war-ravaged territory. According to reports, Israeli forces have carried out multiple strikes, including attacks on schools and refugee camps where civilians were sheltering. The Israeli military has bombed two UN-run schools and a "safe zone" in Gaza, resulting in the deaths of at least 42 Palestinians. US Secretary of State Antony Blinken has expressed concern over the high number of civilian casualties, describing them as "unacceptably high". He met with senior Israeli officials to discuss the situation, but it is unclear whether any concrete steps have been taken to address the issue. The US has not publicly condemned Israel's actions, instead focusing on the need for a ceasefire.
We are looking into the reports stating that several civilians were injured as a result of the strike.
Prior to the strike, numerous steps were taken in order to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of aerial surveillance, precise munitions, and additional intelligence.
Nowhere is safe. The blatant disregard for UN premises and humanitarian law must stop.
Over 95% of these schools were used as shelters when hit. 539 people sheltering in UNRWA facilities have been killed.
Civilian lives and infrastructure are protected under international humanitarian law.
Israel's choices of methods and means of conducting hostilities in Gaza since October 7, including through the extensive use of explosive weapons with wide area effects in densely populated areas, have failed to ensure that they effectively distinguish between civilians and fighters.
We are incredibly troubled by the ongoing deaths of Palestinians in Gaza.
We continue to see far too many civilians killed in this conflict.
We're under constant pressure for medical supplies because not much is getting into Gaza. Humanitarian aid is disproportionately low. And another worrying factor is that malnutrition is on the rise.
There are still five or six hospitals that are saturated with patients, have run out of everything and are therefore providing substandard medicine.
