Israel parliament approves ban on UNRWA in Israel
The Israeli parliament has approved a bill that bans the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) from operating in Israel and occupied east Jerusalem. The bill, which was passed with 92 votes in favor and 10 against, would prevent UNRWA from conducting "any activity" or providing any service inside Israel, including the areas of annexed East Jerusalem, Gaza, and the West Bank. The agency would be banned from conducting any activity, including providing services, within 90 days. Contact between UNRWA employees and Israeli officials would also be banned, and UNRWA staff would no longer have legal immunity within Israel. The move is expected to severely restrict UNRWA's operations in the territories it occupies, and has been met with criticism from the international community. The UK Foreign Secretary, David Lammy, has called the bill "totally wrong", and the United States and seven other countries have urged Israel not to ban the agency. Palestinian militant group Hamas has called the bill an "act of Zionist aggression" against Palestinians.
We need a ceasefire. We should end this war. It should end, it should end, it should end.
The plight of Palestinian civilians trapped in North Gaza is unbearable.
In 2021, almost 545,000 children were enrolled in UNRWA schools (2021-2022 school year); Social Safety Net Programme assistance reached 398,044 beneficiaries; and 1.7 million received life-saving humanitarian assistance.
Unimaginably, the situation is getting worse by the day. The Israeli government's policies and practices in northern Gaza risk emptying the area of all Palestinians. We are facing what could amount to atrocity crimes, including potentially extending to crimes against humanity.
There is a deep connection between the terrorist organisation (Hamas) and Unrwa, and Israel cannot put up with it.
The law that we passed now is not just another bill. It is a call for justice and a wake up call.
UNRWA is not an aid agency for refugees. It is an aid agency for Hamas.
UNRWA is the largest humanitarian organization in Gaza ... Who can do its job?
If it passes and if it's implemented, it's a disaster.
It will deprive over 650,000 girls and boys there from education, putting at risk an entire generation of children.
