Gaza ceasefire talks paused, with plans to resume next week
The United States and mediators have made progress in talks to end the war in Gaza, with a White House statement saying the two-day talks in Doha were "serious and constructive". However, US President Joe Biden notes that "we're not there yet", indicating that a deal has not been reached. Despite this, the talks are expected to continue, with technical teams meeting again in the coming days and the main figures set to meet next week in Cairo. The latest round of talks is the latest in a series of indirect negotiations between Hamas and Israel, which have failed to achieve a deal since a short-lived truce collapsed in December. The talks are also seen as an effort to stall Iranian retaliation against Israel following the assassination of a top Iranian military commander.
Senior officials from our governments will reconvene in Cairo before the end of next week with the aim to conclude the deal under the terms put forward today.
Once again, fear spreads as families have nowhere to go. People remain trapped in an endless nightmare of death and destruction on a staggering scale.
I don't want to jinx anything... we may have something. But we're not there yet.
Our position was clear… we will not go for new negotiation rounds. We will only go to implement what has been agreed on.
In practice, the US gives the cover and green light for the occupation and Netanyahu to continue this war while suggesting that there is a positive atmosphere. In reality, Netanyahu does not care about the atmosphere that the Americans are talking about.
This is vital work. The remaining obstacles can be overcome, and we must bring this process to a close.
