Make no mistake, some of the rebel groups that took down Assad have their own grim record of terrorism and human rights abuses. But as they take on greater responsibility, we will assess not just their words, but their actions.
This historic change in the region offers opportunities but is not without risks.
The process of rebuilding Syria will be long and complicated and all parties must be ready to engage constructively.
A new history, my brothers, is being written in the entire region after this great victory.
How many people were displaced across the world? How many people lived in tents? How many drowned in the seas?
We will not deal with people the way the Assad family did.
The fear is, it will have an Islamist tinge to it. What that exactly means, remains to be seen.
Anti-government armed groups have promised restraint and to uphold humanitarian norms, but they will ultimately be judged by their conduct not their words.
