Arab Leaders Endorse $53 Billion Plan to Rebuild Gaza as Alternative to Trump's Proposal
The international community is actively considering alternative solutions to the US-proposed plan to permanently remove two million Palestinians from the Gaza Strip. Egypt has put forward a $53 billion plan, dubbed as a "phased reconstruction plan," to rebuild Gaza over the next five years. The plan would allow the Palestinian Authority to reassume control over the territory, with its security apparatus taking on governing responsibilities. Under this plan, the Palestinian population would not be forced to leave the territory. The Arab League has endorsed this Egyptian proposal as an alternative to the US plan, which has been criticized as endorsing ethnic cleansing. The Egyptian plan aims to keep Palestinians in Gaza while shutting Hamas out of any governing role. Israel has yet to comment on the plan, and its acceptance is uncertain.
By coming up with a practicable, pragmatic alternative plan for Gaza, the Arab states are putting the onus on Trump to accept their proposal and, in that way, transfer all the pressure on them onto [Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin] Netanyahu to agree to end the war on these reasonable terms.
We are ready to continue to phase two.
With that money they use for terror to restore their abilities and to get more young terrorists into their organisation.
Humanitarian aid became the number one source of income of Hamas in Gaza.
We must avoid at all costs the resumption of hostilities that would plunge millions back into the abyss of suffering and further destabilize the region.
I welcome and strongly endorse the Arab-led initiative to mobilise support for Gaza's reconstruction, clearly expressed in this summit.
The UN stands ready to fully cooperate in this endeavour.
Instead, Arab states have rejected this opportunity, without giving it a fair chance, and continue to level baseless accusations against Israel.
Now, with President Trump's idea, there is an opportunity for the Gazans to have free choice based on their free will.
There will be no true peace without the establishment of the Palestinian state.
We will not accept (any deal) to trade it for reconstruction or the entry of aid.
The weapon of the resistance is a red line, and it is not negotiable.
Our only condition is for this to be an internal Palestinian matter – we will not allow any regional or international party to get involved.
As long as there is national consensus, Hamas will not be involved in the governance.
We cannot accept illegal American projects and visions in the region.
